2 Reasons Why You Need a Magic Name and How to Choose One

Just like in our world, in the world of magic, everything is energy and has its own vibration: symbols, letters, words and names. The way someone calls you, activates a certain frequency which has effect on how the outside world sees you. That is why there are at least a couple of reasons why you need to have a magic name when you begin to practice the mystical arts.

Most people just use the name they were given at birth, the one that stays with them in their passports or ID cards for the rest of their lives. Then there are people of creative professions like writers, actors, celebrities who use pen names or pseudonyms to protect their identity or create new names that sound better. Sometimes in life other people also give us a nickname due to a certain personal trait or to shorten a long official name. When it comes to practicing magic, your magic name is your ID card in the world of energies and magic (as someone said: magic is the highest form of creativity).

One of the main reasons to have magic name is protection. Exploration of the magic world could get rough sometimes and it is always a good idea to have an extra layer of protection. You also don’t really want to mix your social life with the magic realm. The frequency of your social life, the way you interact with you friends, family and peers at work is quite different from interacting with spirits, deities, elements and other higher energies.  It is like shifting gears in a car. There are times when you need to be driving in the first or second gear and there are times when fifth (or higher 😉) gear is needed. Thus, you don’t really want your vessel driving in two gears simultaneously, otherwise it could be quite damaging to the engine. Besides a magic name also protects you from possible consequences of a mistake. If you mess up a certain ritual or practice, your social life will not be hit as hard if you are using your magic name. Exploring the mystical realms is much safer with a protective shell than without it.

The second reason why you would want to have a magic name is because it initiates certain energies that help you focus and concentrate your magic powers on the process you are doing (be it a ritual, meditation, invocation, etc.). It is how you are seen in the magic world and it gives you an extra boost or certain qualities that you would like to empower in yourself. When you choose the name it connects you to the meaning, energies and/or archetype behind the name. It puts you in a certain mood and helps you interact on that level. It is like putting a suit when you go to the office to play the role of a boss, or putting on scuba diving gear when you are exploring the deepness of oceans or a space suit when flying into space.  

So now that that the reasons for having a magic name were addressed, how do you actually choose one. Well, it is really up to you and there are many ways to do it. Some people connect to a totem animal, others go for one of the crystals, deity, rune, symbol, a character from legends or a famous magician. You can also combine meanings or even create something totally new that resonates only with you. In simple terms – just meditate on it and see what comes up. When you have certain idea of what you want your magic name to be, test it out. See how you feel when you start calling yourself the name and if it really resonates with how you want to be seen in the realm of magic and how you want other practitioners relate to you and your work. There is really no set in sone rules when it comes to your magic name – you just need to be true in your heart and spirit when choosing it.
